Gang of six men robbed Rs 32 lakh in HSR Layout

June 1st, 2011

The employees of Shiva Trading Company were robbed by a gang of six men and took away two bags containing the money. One bag contained Rs 20 lakh and the other contained Rs 12 lakh. The robbers threw chilli powder on the employees’ faces, blinding them temporarily.

Police said the employees of Shiva Trading Company were taking the cash to be deposited in a bank when the alleged robbers intercepted their vehicle at Madivala police station limits at about 11.15 am. The machete-wielding robbers had been tailing the employees’ Maruti Eeco in a car. One of them broke the glass of the left rear window, and took away two bags containing the money. The staffers were on their way to Karnataka Bank branch near Silk Board when they were robbed.

The employees were identified as Lakshman, Shankara Reddy and Krishna Reddy, and driver Rajasekhara Reddy. Though the staffers were threatened with machetes, none of them were injured. Krishna Reddy was a relative of the firm’s proprietor, police said.

Joint commissioner of police (crime) Alok Kumar said, “A separate team has been formed to arrest the gang. All check-posts have been alerted,” the officer said.

A witness, who was heading towards Silk Board Junction, said he saw a red car speeding away towards Hosur. “I thought the occupants of the car were under the influence of alcohol. Then I heard someone screaming for help. I thought the car was involved in a hit-and-run case. I rushed to the spot and learnt of the robbery,” he added.

Drains being cleared, respite for HRS residents

May 20th, 2011

After repeated complaints, the civic authorities have started de-silting of drains to avoid overflow of sewage.

Overflowing sewage and storm water drains are commonplace in HSR Layout, leaving the area in a mess. Drains overflow, leaving the solid contents on the streets, and sewage water enters the storm drain, making it all the more difficult for the denizens to bear the stench and water-logging.

After repeated written complaints and phone calls, the authorities are now taking some action and de-silting the drains for the smooth flow of water and to avoid overflow.

Residents and RWA members are expecting some quality work from the civic authorities so that they do not have to approach the department concerned, corporator and other officials of civic bodies again.

Speaking to Cityplus, BBMP assistant engineer S Somashekar said, “Rs 18 lakh has been allocated for de-silting of drains in HSR Layout. Work started a week back and in two or three weeks, work will be complete. In 5th Main, 9th Main, 15th Main the de-silting work is almost complete and depending on the complaints we received we will take the work on the priority basis.”
When asked which are the other mains or roads where work is taking place, Corporator Latha Narashimamurthy,

“We asked Residents’ Welfare Associations to identify the drains in their sectors and even I have inspected few places. The civic authorities will start work where the condition is worst and needs immediate action.”

Cauvery water project taking too long to finish in HSR

May 19th, 2011

Residents tired of noise and dust pollution
It’s been a year since work started on the 2nd phase of Cauvery water project in HSR Layout but completion seems nowhere in sight, leaving residents and shopkeepers to bear with the noise and dust.

In HSR, the project starts from 24th Main (near Parangipalya) till 27th Main. The worst sufferers of the dust and noise pollution are people residing behind and parallel to 27th Main.

27th Main is a popular shopping place for residents of HSR Layout, where most of the showrooms, banks, restaurants are located. But because of the ongoing pipeline work, even the condition of the road is in a bad state. It is difficult to drive because the project has occupied half of the road and the condition of the remaining portion is bad.

HSR Layout Residents’ Welfare Federation and Sector 1 RWA had complained to the corporator and the BWSSB officials concerned but to date they have not received a proper response.

Residents’ Welfare Federation vice-president Hiremath said, “I really don’t know whether the people concerned are incompetent or there is any technical difficulty. We agree that major works take time but it is taking too long. Many a time, this issue has been discussed in the federation’s meetings as well.”

Speaking about this problem, Sector 1 RWA general secretary Manjunath said, “While digging the road, two huge rocks have been found in two spots of 27th Main near Karnataka Bank and near Royal Needs. BWSSB officials have given this as one of the reasons for the delay.

Rain plays havoc, blame game on. But what`s new?

May 6th, 2011

Overflowing drains are a never-ending problem in HSR Layout, especially when it rains. The problem made a comeback after the recent heavy showers. The problem was bad at the 3rd Sector, since it is a low-lying area, especially at 23rd Cross, 17th Main.

All the small and big drains in the area are not properly designed and they start overflowing after every heavy shower. Vacant sites get filled with drain water. Residents are literally scared to come out from their homes whenever it rains. There are a few cases when residents suffered minor injuries when they slipped and fell down.

Rekha, a resident said, “Most of the corner sites belong to BDA and there are no caretakers. Whenever it rains, the sites are filled with dirty water. Overgrown weeds give them the look of a mini jungle. They have become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and there is a stinking smell in the surroundings.

As summer holidays have started, children want to go out and play but we cannot allow them because everywhere there is dirty water.”

Another resident of 17th ‘A’ Main, 23rd Cross Dharmendar said, “Through our sector’s Residents’ Welfare Society (RWS), we had complained many times to BWSSB and BBMP but so far we have not received any response. We are fed up of calling our corporator. Roads in the 3rd Sector are very narrow so when the drain water enters the road, it creates a lot of inconvenience.”

3rd Sector RWS secretary H M Javali said, “We have written letters and called BWSSB and BBMP officials a number of times. BWSSB officials say that it’s not sewage water which is overflowing but just rain water. BBMP says it’s BWSSB’s work. We have written a letter to the commissioner as well, but it didn’t help.”

Sewage water mixes with drinking line, residents fall ill

April 28th, 2011

Taps in houses of at least two streets in Koramangala 5th Block have started spewing sewage-contaminated water for the last five days. Many residents have fallen ill after consuming the water supplied through BWSSB pipelines of 3rd Cross and 4th Cross of 17th ‘B’ Main road.

The BWSSB is yet to locate where exactly the leakage is happening. Initially, the residents did not notice it but many started getting upset stomachs, especially children.

Soon after the residents complained, the BWSSB men on last Monday dug up the junction of 3rd Cross and 17 ‘B’ Main road and cut open the water pipeline. It was found that sewage was flowing in it from the higher end of the 3rd Cross towards the 4th Cross.

“Open the sump and you get a foul smell, open the tap and you get sewage mixed water. It is literally a microbial soup. See the froth and smell in water,” said residents when Cityplus visited the spot on last Monday.

Many residents had tried contacting officials earlier, but no one turned up till last Monday.

“After drinking water, my children have fallen sick. They have stomach upsets, while my nephew has been admitted to the hospital where she is taking glucose drips,”

said a resident, Syed Yassin. “I was out of station and my wife and children didn’t know what exactly happened,

BBMP gears up for monsoon, lists dos and don`ts

April 28th, 2011

In a bid to avoid any untoward incidents during the coming monsoon, the commissioner of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has ordered de-silting all four major storm water drains (SWDs) and roadside drains, pruning of dead branches and removal encroachments on drains besides widening them.

People residing in low-lying areas will be warned about problems that may arise during heavy rains and boards containing important information will be put up in the areas.

BBMP commissioner Siddaiah said fences will be set up near SWDs to prevent people from walking next to them. “Roadside drains will be covered by stone slabs to avoid people falling into drains during the rainy season,” he added.

A slew of safety works will be taken up and expected to be completed before the onset of monsoon. “It requires a minimum of half-an-hour for rainwater to reach the SWDs if the city receives more than 45 mm of rainfall in one hour.

During this time, untoward incidents will take place as drains will be overflowing and would cause huge loss of property by inundating houses in the layouts that are illegally constructed in low-lying areas,”

the commissioner said.Siddaiah urged people to be cautious during the monsoon and follow safety measures

Residents wait for park but BDA yet to decide

April 15th, 2011

Residents of HSR Layout 3rd Sector are eagerly and painstakingly waiting for work on the neighbourhood park of 17th ‘A’ Main, 23rd ‘A’ Cross to start.

After many hurdles, somehow the boulders that were dumped there have been cleared. Residents are using this four-acre park but a lot need to be done before they can use it freely. But the BDA’s Town Planning Commission has not yet taken a final decision about this park.

Dharmendhar, one of the residents of 23rd Main said, “This area is slowly becoming an urban slum, unless the authorities look into the real problem nothing can happen. We are waiting for a good park in our area, but it’s getting delayed for one or the other reason. Hoping the authorities consider this area and come to a good conclusion.”

Speaking to Cityplus, 3rd sector Residents’ Welfare Association secretary H M Javali said, “We wrote a letter to the BDA Commissioner on January 28, explaining him the issue. But so far we have not received any response. We just need a good park according to the plan.”

Then there is another problem for the residents. The 23rd ‘A’ Cross leads to the park and stops at the fencing of the west side of the park. There is a move to extend the park road to reach 18th Main easily, but then it would lead to a reduction of 20 per cent area of the park.
